Fur farming is falling out of favour across Europe, and Denmark needs to catch up. Fur farms are not only cruel to mink, but they also present a pandemic risk. The Danish government must act now!
Sick, Stressed and Suffering Animals
Raising animals for fur is increasingly being seen as abhorrent by humans across the world. Despite this, thousands are suffering on farms right in Denmark. Many are driven to self-mutilation or cannibalisation of their cagemates by the stress of captivity. They’re gassed at just 6 months old so their skin can be turned into a coat, a pompom, or another frivolous fashion item that no one needs.
Public Health Hazard
Mink farming in Denmark made international headlines in 2020 when around 17 million mink were killed across the country.
Fur farms packed with sick, stressed, and suffering animals are revolting places. This means that, as well as being cruel, fur farms present a serious pandemic risk to humans. Because mink are particularly susceptible to respiratory illnesses, mink farms around the world became dangerous breeding grounds for disease and were identified as COVID-19 hotspots.
Bird flu, which is seen by many experts as a serious future pandemic risk, has also been found on mink farms in Europe. In 2024, former director of the CDC Robert Redfield said a bird flu pandemic was “very likely”. If we shut down mink farms, we could help lower that risk.
When it comes to the risk of disease, fur farms are no different to the live-animal market in which COVID-19 is believed to have originated. It’s easy for infectious diseases to spread on fur farms through the exchange of urine, excrement, pus, and blood. Mink with infections, sores, and festering, open wounds caused by the wire flooring they stand on are a common sight.
Europe is Saying NO to Fur Farming
Denmark must follow in the footsteps of many other European countries and permanently ban fur farming to spare the lives of humans and other animals.
