Take a Stand Against the Romanian Dog Slaughter

Each year in Romania, tens of thousands of stray dogs, most of whom were struggling to survive on city streets, are systematically captured and slaughtered. Please speak out against this bloodshed, which is legal under Romanian law.

Killing stray dogs never has any long-term benefit for population control. It has been shown repeatedly that the homeless-animal population quickly rebounds after large-scale killing campaigns. The only effective way to reduce the population of homeless dogs humanely is to implement a sterilisation programme and to prohibit the sale of animals in markets and pet shops. Since 2015, all dogs in Romania must legally be spayed or neutered, but few people are aware of this law, and little is done to enforce it.

It's urgent that compassionate people speak out now to urge the government to end this cruel extermination programme immediately. Please sign our petition to Romania's Prime Minister and Ambassador in the UK right now.

Please Stop the Slaughter of Romanian Dogs

Dogs are intelligent, sentient beings, yet under law 258/2013, thousands of stray dogs are cruelly captured and slaughtered in Romania. I am joining people in Romania and around the world in speaking out against this inhumane legislation, which has opened the floodgates to barbaric mass killings of animals.

Killing homeless dogs never has any long-term benefit for population control. It has been shown repeatedly that the homeless-animal population quickly rebounds after large-scale killing campaigns. Although it's a legal requirement for all dogs in Romania to be sterilised, few people are aware of this law – therefore, it must be enforced more vigorously.

Homeless-animal populations can be reduced effectively by enforcing a mandatory sterilisation programme, prohibiting the sale of animals in markets and pet shops, and meaningfully implementing the punishment for abandoning animals on the streets. Trap-neuter-release programmes that have already proved successful in some cities should be replicated nationwide.

I urge you to repeal law 258/2013 and to advocate a humane and effective solution. By implementing comprehensive spay-and-neuter programmes, long-term, animal-friendly population control is possible.

Yours sincerely,
