No More Deaths: Call For a Permanent End to Bullfights and Bull Runs

Each July at the San Fermín festival in Pamplona, Spain, a spectacle of torment known as the Running of the Bulls takes place. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event planned for 2021 has been cancelled. Will you help stop it forever?

Every summer, young bulls who have had very little contact with humans are transported to Pamplona on a long and stressful journey. The San Fermín organisers confine them to a small pen for several days. Then, they release them into a noisy, chaotic mob of people – many of whom are tourists – who chase the terrified animals through the narrow streets of the city. The bulls often crash into walls or lose their footing, sometimes breaking bones.

And that's not the end of it. Later that day, they're tormented and killed in the bullring. At least 48 bulls are barbarically stabbed to death during the week of bloodshed.

The Running of the Bulls and subsequent bullfights will not take place in 2021 because of COVID-19, sparing 48 bulls torment and death. PETA is calling for a permanent end to the bull runs and bullfights and for them to be replaced with a humane alternative so people can enjoy the usual revelry with none of the cruelty to animals.

Dear Mr Mayor,

I urge you to ban the Running of the Bulls and subsequent bullfights during the San Fermín festival for good and to replace these cruel spectacles with a humane alternative.

Bulls are sentient beings with unique personalities who form complex social bonds. The Running of the Bulls and bullfights cause them extreme suffering.

At only 5 years old, bulls brought to Pamplona face a terrifying mob of people who chase them through the narrow streets of the city. They often lose their footing around corners and crash into walls, sometimes breaking bones or injuring themselves in other ways.

They're then repeatedly taunted in the bullring, forced to run to the point of exhaustion, and stabbed with multiple weapons, killing them slowly and painfully. This cruelty is rightfully banned in many parts of the world.

We, the undersigned, demand an end to this violence and urge you to replace the bull runs and bullfights with humane activities that don't involve animals.
