Escada Is Supporting Extreme Cruelty to Animals for Fur – Act Now

Designer clothing brand Escada is selling real fur again, despite knowing that animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to filthy cages before finally being beaten, electrocuted, or gassed to death – or even skinned alive.

Back in 2011, Escada made the compassionate decision to stop selling fur. But the label has since gone back on its pledge and started stocking shoes trimmed with mink fur and jackets with collars made from raccoon dog pelts, supporting egregious cruelty to animals.

Dear Mr Putzer,

I was shocked to learn that Escada has broken its promise and is selling fur items again, despite being aware of the suffering that goes into every fur coat, collar, and accessory.

In the fur industry, minks, foxes, and other animals are locked up for their entire lives before being killed for their skins. The intense confinement often drives these inquisitive, intelligent animals mad.

Numerous investigations of fur farms in many fur-producing countries have documented horrendous atrocities. Animals have been found with eye infections, sores on their feet caused by standing in filthy wire cages, missing limbs, and festering, untreated open wounds – including head injuries so severe that their brains were visible.

Babies were kept in cages with the rotting corpses of their mothers, and animals exhibited neurotic behaviour as a result of psychological trauma. All fur – no matter which country it originates in or whom it belonged to – is a product of extreme cruelty to animals.

Fur production is also extremely damaging to the environment. Mink farms, for example, generate tonnes of phosphorus-containing faeces, which can run into nearby streams and rivers and cause harmful emissions of nitrous oxide and ammonia. Producing a coat made from the pelts of farmed animals requires more than 15 times as much energy as manufacturing a faux-fur coat.

There's no excuse for using real fur again. Fashion houses including Prada, Michael Kors, Armani, and Gucci have recently banned fur – and thanks to the countless high-quality, cosy faux-fur fabrics that don't harm animals, Escada can do the same. Please, do the right thing and ditch fur immediately.
