I was horrified to learn that experimenters at the University of Edinburgh used 225,366 animals in scientific procedures in 2017, including 44,415 fish, 713 cows, 176,307 rats and mice, 80 frogs, 3,464 birds, and 1,100 other animals.

Every one of these animals was a unique individual with the capacity to feel pain and fear, and they undoubtedly suffered tremendously during the procedures performed on them at the University of Edinburgh.

A range of non-animal alternatives are available, including in vitro methods using human cells and tissues as well as advanced computer-modelling techniques. Not only are these more humane than tests on animals, they're also more reliable and precise and can be more cost-effective.

As one of the top universities in the UK, the University of Edinburgh has a responsibility to lead the way in ethical research. I therefore urge you to move away from inflicting pain and suffering on animals and to invest more in modern, pioneering, animal-free research methods.
