Dear Councillor McLean,
I was concerned to learn that Puy du Fou's proposed theme park near Bicester may include live animal performances and exhibits.
Puy du Fou in France uses over 2,000 animals in historical-themed performances. They force horses to run in chariot races, and gallop supporting men wearing full armour. Wild animal circuseswill soon be prohibited in France, but still the park exploits big cats, hyenas, ostriches, birds of prey, and countless other wildlife in demeaning performances.
The park has a history of animal abuse and neglect. French reporter Hugo Clément published accounts from former employees, revealing numerous instances of violence and acts of cruelty, including horses being beaten, camels being drugged, cats being used to train birds of prey, and other disturbing incidents.
Animals exploited at attractions commonly endure the misery of confinement, separation from their families, and forced interaction with humans. The loud crowds, dramatic special effects, stunts, and repetitive performances can expose horses to stress, and put them at risk of injury. Big cats, birds of prey, and all animals whether wild or domesticated, deserve to live free and be treated with respect.
History can be brought to life without exploiting animals. Britain has banned wild animal use in circuses, and most attractions and theme parks have now completely left animal shows where they belong, in the past.
We urge Cherwell District Council to show leadership by rejecting all parts of Puy du Fou’s planning proposal concerning live animal exhibits or performances.
Sincerely,
