‘Severe’ Sepsis Experiments On Mice

After developing sepsis from bacteria in their faecal matter, mice at Queen Mary University may suffer from extreme pain, breathing difficulties, fever, and organ failure. Experiments such as these can cause “severe” pain and distress. Experimenters then kill the mice, take some body parts for later study and discard the rest like waste products.

Mice are not test tubes with tails – they are sentient beings who feel pain, joy, and happiness. These experiments must end now.

Cruel AND Pointless

Sepsis experiments on mice have failed to result in a single targeted, effective drug or treatment for human sepsis. Around 48,000 humans in the UK die from sepsis each year – but this is distinct from the condition that rodents suffer from in sepsis experiments. Conducting these experiments on mice may be hindering progress in sepsis research and prolonging the suffering of human patients.

The Future of Research is Animal-Free

Major health bodies, including the US National Institute of General Medical Studies, are phasing out the use of animals in sepsis experiments. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is moving away from experiments on animals altogether.

Human-relevant research methods, such as AI tools, computational models of human cells and tissues, and organs-on-chips and organoids generated using human cells, are all examples of advanced and humane methods that the scientific community can adopt. Experiments on animals must become a thing of the past.

I recently discovered that mice, who are sentient beings capable of feeling pain just like us, are being used in cruel and ineffective sepsis experiments at Queen Mary University.

Mice are being cut open and having their intestines punctured to release faecal matter into their abdomens, causing sepsis. They then suffer the agonising symptoms of the disease before being killed, harvested for body parts and discarded.

Are you aware that Francis Collins, the former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US, previously stated that sepsis in mice significantly differs from sepsis in humans? He also said that sepsis mouse experiments have led to a “heartbreaking loss of decades of research and billions of dollars.”

No animal experiment to date has led to a single targeted, effective drug or treatment for sepsis. This realisation has led major bodies, like the NIH, to move away from using mice in sepsis research. The University of Kent also recently committed to not using animals in their sepsis research.

Please make the logical and ethical decision to end these cruel and ineffective experiments now – for the sake of both mice and humans.
