PETA Asia investigations at Egypt’s top tourist sites, including the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Sphinx, have repeatedly documented appalling abuse of horses and camels forced to haul tourists in carriages or serve as photo props. The bodies of dead horses were dumped like rubbish behind the walls at the pyramids, and camels were beaten bloody with batons at Egypt’s camel market in Cairo. Animals are worked to exhaustion in extreme heat, without appropriate shade, and often with no adequate water. Please stand against this abuse by urging travel companies to stop promoting, selling, or offering animal rides in Egypt.
Wounded and Exhausted Horses Eat Rubbish to Survive
The desperate horses often forage in skips for something to eat. Eating rubbish can lead to painful and often deadly colic. Horses are worked continuously and viciously whipped when faltering, even when they collapse.
Many horses used for rides at the pyramids of Giza were seen with painful, bloody wounds, but were forced to continue carting tourists around. Even those with severe injuries, like broken legs, are denied veterinary care. Some are cruelly branded with red-hot metal irons.
Camels Whipped, Beaten, and Abused
At the notorious Birqash Camel Market, PETA Asia has once again obtained video footage of the horrific abuse of camels sold for meat, farm work, or use at top tourism sites.
Handlers carry wooden batons and routinely hit the camels, sometimes until they’re left with bloody wounds. The animals’ legs are bound, so they can’t move around. One camel was tied to the back of a lorry and dragged down a street. No one intervened.

Travel Industry Response
After hearing from PETA, dozens of travel companies around the globe have committed to not promoting or selling the rides at the pyramids, including Abercrombie & Kent, Airbnb, Audley Travel, British Airways Holidays, G Adventures, Hays Travel, Scott Dunn, and Travel Republic. Yet other operators continue to prop up this abusive activity. It’s time for all travel companies to take responsibility and stop promoting or booking animal rides in Egypt.
