According to the Ministry of Defence (MOD), live pigs are "subjected to bullet and blast wounds" and animals who don't die during the exercises are later killed. These exercises are cruel and unnecessary, as non-animal military medical training methods are available. In fact, 21 of 31 NATO nations have confirmed that they don't use animals in military medical training.
There are many alternatives, such as lifelike human simulators that can "breathe", "bleed", and be used in realistic battlefield scenarios. This technology has been proved to be more effective than animal-based training in preparing medics to treat humans. In 2012, a panel of independent medical experts convened by a German court determined that using animals for courses similar to those in which the MOD participates is unjustifiable because superior alternatives are available.
Such animal mutilations also appear to violate UK, Danish, and EU law, which require the use of non-animal training methods whenever possible.
