Urge Boris Johnson to Ban Imports of Hunting Trophies

All animals are beloved by their mates and offspring, but to hunters, they're only the sum of their body parts, seen simply as living targets to kill, decapitate, and display on the wall. In the past decade, trophy hunters have imported 2,500 animal parts into the UK, including the heads and skins of cheetahs, elephants, lions, hippos, and zebras. The UK can deter hunters from taking part in the killing of animals by banning imports of such trophies, thereby preventing people from bringing their sick souvenirs home.

You can help wild animals by demanding that Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduce a ban without delay. He vowed ahead of the December 2019 general election to end imports of animal heads and carcasses into the UK, a promise he reiterated in the House of Commons in February 2020.

Polls show that nine out of 10 British people want to see an end to this horrific activity, because they know that animals shot by trophy hunters often endure a prolonged and painful death – simply so that hunters can chop off their heads and other body parts and send them back home as trophies. By continuing to allow hunters to ship these macabre items to the UK, the government is supporting the slaughter of elephants, lions, and other magnificent species.

I was outraged to learn that the UK government still allows trophy hunters to ship the body parts of elephants, lions, giraffes, and other wild animals to the UK. Allowing this condones the senseless killing of defenceless animals in a manner that often causes a prolonged and painful death. Please do the right thing and ban all imports of hunting trophies immediately.

All animals are beloved by their mates and babies, but to hunters, they are merely targets to kill, decapitate, and hang on the wall as a decoration. Trophy hunters lack empathy, compassion, and respect for wild animals, who just want to be left in peace. Hunters get a sick thrill out of taking a life and are willing to pay thousands of pounds to travel the world just to kill animals – who are often trapped in a fenced compound or private game reserve or lured with bait out of the safety of a national park to where the shooter awaits them. Some who facilitate this blood sport track down animals for a fee. It is not uncommon for them to encounter sleeping animals, who can be shot at extremely close range.

Ahead of the last general election, you made a promise to ban hunting trophy imports, and you have since stated that your government means to follow through on its pledge. But while the government delays, animals continue to be hunted down for the sake of a trophy to mount on a wall. Please, end imports of hunting trophies immediately.
