Data on animal experiments conducted by UK institutions were generated via requests to public bodies submitted under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Respondents either fulfilled, partially fulfilled, or failed to fulfil the requests.
If the university you're looking for isn't on the list, you can use the sample letter below to write to the institution yourself and request information on the animal experiments carried out there.
Dear [Principal/Chancellor],
I am writing to request that you disclose information on the number of scientific procedures on animals, as regulated under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, that have been conducted at [University Name]. I specifically request data for the number of procedures that have been conducted, per species, over the previous year.
Every animal is a unique individual with the capacity to feel pain and fear, and each one undoubtedly suffers tremendously when experimented on.
A variety of non-animal research methods are available, including in vitro methods using human cells and tissues as well as advanced computer-modelling techniques. Not only are these more humane than tests on animals, they are also more reliable and precise and can be more cost-effective.
As one of the top universities in the UK, [University Name] has a responsibility to lead the way in ethical research. I therefore urge you to invest in modern, pioneering, animal-free research methods.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely, [Your Name]
Although we don't have active campaigns for all universities, having more data on institutions' experiments on animals will help inform our future campaigning. If you receive a response from the university, please do forward it to us at [email protected].
