Urge the Government to Mandate an End to All Experiments on Animals

It's time for the UK to replace all experiments on animals, and PETA scientists can help.

Politicians and decision-makers must recognise how much time, how much money, and how many lives are wasted in the current research paradigm:

  • In the existing animal research paradigm, novel drugs take 10 to 15 years to reach the market at a cost of over £1.5 billion, and over 95% do not pass clinical trials.
  • Between 50% and 89% of preclinical research isn’t reproducible, with animal experimentation implicated as a significant factor.
  • The differences among species are so vast that results in animals are, at best, a very poor approximation of what will happen in humans or, at worst, dangerously misleading.

We need to shift away from all experiments using animals. It’s time for the Research Modernisation Deal!

PETA's Research Modernisation Deal maps out a strategy for replacing the use of animals in biomedical research and regulatory testing. With greater investment in animal-free methods, scientists in the UK would be able to develop better treatments for human diseases as well as more reliable methods for toxicity assessment.

Finally – and crucially – this would help end the almost unimaginable suffering of millions of mice, rats, dogs, primates, rabbits, fish, and other animals.

Please sign our petition urging the government to implement a policy that mandates an end to animal experimentation and provides a clear strategy and timeline for achieving this goal.

To: Home Office; Department for Science, Innovation and Technology; and Department of Health and Social Care

Please commit to the EU’s final goal of fully replacing the use of animals in scientific procedures to ensure that the UK is not left behind – in either animal-welfare standards or scientific innovation – in the wake of Brexit. Although EU Directive 2010/63/EU (the Directive) has been transposed into the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, the UK has not formally adopted the EU’s ultimate goal of replacing the use of animals in scientific procedures, as reflected in Recital 10 of the Directive. We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the government take this official step immediately, establishing a clear policy within a legislative framework, mandating an end to experimentation on animals, and providing a clear strategy and timeline for achieving this goal. Redirecting funding away from unreliable and unethical tests on animals and instead investing in superior, non-animal methods will benefit humans, animals, and the future of science in the UK.

Yours sincerely,
